SUMMARY:National Forum Seminar: A Practice Exchange of Innovations in EBP Education
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will explore the embedding of evidence based practice (EBP) teaching and learning within and across healthcare professional curricula. EBP is fundamental for safe\, high-quality healthcare and therefore an essential component of all healthcare programmes. However\, designing and integrating EBP learning opportunities which explicitly and progressively drive student learning is a known curriculum design challenge. A recent Irish HEI review found that EBP was infrequently embedded within curricula (Lehane 2018). In response a UCC-led team recently defined EBP core competencies for health professionals (Lehane 2020). Building on this work\, UCD formed an EBP Education Collaborative (EVIBEC) and built on this work\, developing a vertical interdisciplinary framework\, co-designed with students\, that mapped learning outcomes to these competencies and suggested learning activities to achieve these.

SUMMARY:AHEAD Conference 2022: Safe Haven or Stormy Port? Exploring how tertiary education design impacts our health
DESCRIPTION:The conference will focus on a number of key themes and areas highlighting the variety of elements involved in creating a positive and student centric tertiary education experience for all students. These themes have been influenced by outcomes of the ongoing work and discussions of the AHEAD/USI Students with Disabilities Advisory Group 2020/21. Group members have frequently cited over-assessment\, assessment bunching\, the lack of flexibility afforded to them and inaccessibility of learning materials/practices as significant causes of anxiety and stress.

SUMMARY:Building a Community of Inquiry Online: Deepening Student Experiential Learning
DESCRIPTION:This interactive workshop introduces participants to the process of creating meaningful collaborative online student learning experience through targeted teaching presence\, underpinned by the educational Community of Inquiry (ECoI) framework (Garrison et al.\, 2000). ECoI will be used to first address course design and then course implementation (Swan et al.\, 2014). Tools including guided reflection and questioning instructional methods will be used to consider how a balance of direct instruction and facilitation (Nasir et al.\, 2018) can help guide learners’ written or audio-recorded reflections based on assigned readings and personal experience. Discipline specific questioning methods will be used to consider how learner reflections can be challenged through the inquiry lens\, thereby moving away from superficial discussion responses to more meaningful dialogue and engagement with tutor and peers\, ultimately leading to greater learning outcomes (Hambacher et al.\, 2018). Examples of both individual and group inquiry activities will help participants consider the optimum level of online teacher presence and influence. This approach can help build a community of inquiry\, where learners reply to the teacher and/or peer questions through dialogue\, modelling and facilitation (Liu\, 2018). This thinking-encouraging approach is effective in engaging and challenging online learners\, reinforced by an iterative peer feedback loop as a scalable intervention (Fillusa et al.\, 2018). Considerations include scaffolding\, instructional design\, and understanding students’ comfort level with collaborative online work (Robinson et al.\, 2017). Examples of how rubrics can be built to map learner inquiry skill development to programme assignments will form part of the workshop.

SUMMARY:Team Based Learning: Optimising Active and Collaborative Learning
DESCRIPTION:This short workshop aims to introduce participants to Team-Based Learning (TBL) by experiencing it as a student would. TBL is a student-centred ‘flipped’ learning and teaching strategy designed to engage students through a process of preparation\, assessment and application of knowledge. It shifts the focus of classroom time from conveying course concepts by the teacher to the application of course concepts by student learning teams. Participants will learn the principles of TBL through active and collaborative learning and will learn about and be able to question the expert facilitator on his experiences of using TBL over the last 9 years.
