SUMMARY:Transform EDU Week Event 5: Developing Sustainability Literate Graduates – Adapting the UN Sulitest to Classroom and Aligning the Curriculum to the SDGs
DESCRIPTION:Universities have been mandated under SDG 4.7.1 to develop sustainability literature graduates. By sustainability literacy\, we refer to the knowledge\, skills\, and mindsets that help compel an individual to become deeply committed to building a sustainable future (Décamps\, 2017). \nIn this webinar we explore the transformative nature of education for sustainability and underpinning reflective pedagogy. We outline a whole-of-university approach to ensuring that it is embedded across the curricula. \nWe highlight approaches to measurement and evaluation and showcase the use of the UN’s sustainability literacy test or SULITEST www.sulitest.org with reflective practice in contextualising sustainability literacy across different disciplines.

SUMMARY:Transform EDU Week Event 4: Contract Cheating – Valuing Teaching\, Learning and Education
DESCRIPTION:Contract cheating represents a challenge to the academic integrity of the educational system. Although one single solution to contract cheating does not exist\, the importance of an educative approach is recognised to ensure that students benefit from the learning opportunities offered to them. \nThis lead presentation for the Transform-EDU Project held during Valuing Ireland’s Teaching & Learning Week will review the characteristics of contract cheating\, including how educators can recognise breaches. The presentation will also consider opportunities available for educators to mitigate the risks of students succumbing to contract cheating\, including how this topic can be taught to students and how preventative measures can be put into place. Time will be available for questions and discussion.

SUMMARY:Transform EDU Week Event 2 – Education for Citizenship and Community Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Our key note presentation will focus on the role of Higher Education in developing society though engagement with civic society (third sector). A key function of Technological Universities is to serve the community and public interest by (i) developing strong social and cultural links with the community in the region in which its campuses are located\, and (ii) fostering effective relationships with organisations involved in regional development – contributing to economic\, cultural\, social and scientific development of the State. This webinar will focus on how universities can contribute to inclusive\, sustainable and empowered communities by educating young people to participate actively in civil society. \nWe will also provide an overview of a new Active Citizenship module that aims to educate students in key concepts related to citizenship; encourage students to get actively involved in their communities to achieve personal development; and to further civic goals. The module is influenced by thought-leaders\, including Raghuram Rajan\, author of the Third Pillar\, The Revival of Community in a Polarised World\, Paul Collier John Kay\, authors of Greed is Dead: Politics after Individualism \nThe Transform EDU team will also provide an overview of findings from case-study research on civic engagement and community development in South Dublin.

SUMMARY:Recognising past present & future challenges & opportunities of blended Teaching & Learning
DESCRIPTION:This in-person and online hybrid session will provide an opportunity for us all to reflect on the challenges and opportunities we have/continue to face during a global pandemic in relation to Teaching & Learning. \n’We are in the midst of a technological era that is entirely disruptive. The pace at which technology\, society and world economies are evolving has never been faster. We know that the future for our students\, graduates and staff will be very different to that of today. So too\, higher education must evolve and advance\, to support our people and communities\, to be truly relevant\, and to deliver real impact” – David Fitzpatrick\, TU (Technological University) Dublin President \nGuest Speakers: \nWe will explore the future of blended/hybrid learning with our key speaker Dr. Tony Bates with a pre-recorded presentation. \nWe will be welcomed via live stream with Donald Clark\, EdTech entrepreneur and evangelist for the use of technology in learning. Donald will discuss challenges (political\, economic\, pedagogic and cultural) faced by Higher Education and the need for technology and change. He will also explore innovations in technology such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how we can exploit these technologies to transform our T&L practices. \nPanel Discussion: \nA panel of teaching and learning experts will reflect on our speaker’s presentations and discuss the following areas: \nWe will discuss the impact the global pandemic has had on teaching and learning for all our students and staff within Technological University Dublin. \nWe will explore the challenges both academics and students face/have faced and how we have worked together to address these issues with people\, processes\, and technologies. \nDuring this section of the session\, we will be using interactive polling and audience participation via Vevox Technology.

SUMMARY:The Impact of Unconscious Bias - a Workshop for Students
DESCRIPTION:The workshop would be very beneficial for apprentices and students who go on work placement or indeed all student groups as it is such an important topic for them to be aware of.   It is open to any student groups across the CUA/St. Angela’s College. The workshop will also be recorded should any lecturers wish to distribute it or use it again for their class groups. \n  \nThis workshop has been organised with the support of CELT and is being funded by the National Forum for VIT&L (valuing Ireland’s teaching and learning) week. \n\n  \nThe impact of unconscious bias? \nUnconscious biases impact all of us and form part of how we think. Most people are not fully aware of how bias may affect how they perceive and think about other people. Bias will affect perception\, attitudes and behaviour towards others and some of this behaviour can be quite subtle. The aim of this workshop will be to allow students to understand how their brain works in terms of how they make decisions and think about other people. They will understand how bias occurs in all of us and recognise the impact of any associated behaviours. They will be able to name and recognise common biases and hopefully get some a-ha moments in recognising their own unconscious biases or unseen barriers to inclusive cultures and how we interact with others. \nThis workshop will explore what inclusivity look like and how to mitigate some of the behaviours and blockers to being inclusive\, and to manage the impact of unconscious biases. \nPress Book Now for further information and registration.
