SUMMARY:Active Learning Strategies – A Travel and Tourism Programme Perspective
DESCRIPTION:The devastating impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on the national and international travel and tourism industries y have been well documented to date (WTO\, 2021; OECD\, 2021; Fáilte Ireland\, 2021; ITIC\, 2021Research suggests that online learning has been shown to increase retention of information\, and take less time\, meaning the changes coronavirus have caused might be here to stay. As a result\, education has changed dramatically\, with the distinctive rise of e-learning\, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms. COVID-19 has created challenges in our educational system worldwide (UNESCO\, 2020). Due to this pandemic\, the higher education system in travel and tourism has moved away from traditional classroom settings to non-traditional environments such as hybrid and online classrooms. The recent movement has significantly changed the way lecturers teach and engage students in this new environment\, creating issues for both lecturers and students. Travel and tourism academics continually endeavour to apply creative and varied active learning techniques to maximise learning opportunities such as guest lectures which play an integral part in the module delivery for any travel and tourism programme. The aim of this seminar is to investigate the viability of delivering a 100% online level 8 travel and tourism education in Ireland. Consequently\, this seminar will be incorporate the expertise of three leading academics in the field of both the national and international context of travel and tourism on how Irish higher education institutions can realise their potential to deliver world-class travel and tourism programmes solely online.

SUMMARY:Challenges for Learning Design & Teaching Practice Beyond the Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:The earlier embedding of student-centred approaches to learning and teaching\, digital innovation\, co-creation and institutional capacity building were key to the transition to emergency remote teaching across the global HE sector in March 2020. Many institutions wedded to traditional teaching methods encountered barriers as they moved from campus-based provision to online learning at scale and at very short notice. In this session\, Ale will reflect on how pedagogic transformation normalised before Covid-19 influenced the way institutions and their students operated during the pandemic. Drawing from his work at the University of Northampton between 2012 and 2020\, he will explore what this preparedness involves\, including creative and sometimes radical ways of tackling challenges. He will review recent research into student and staff engagement in blended learning settings\, as well as implications and challenges for learning design\, teaching practice and “emergency professional development” beyond the pandemic.

SUMMARY:Using Creative Methodologies to Explore Issues in Educational Practice
DESCRIPTION:This online seminar offers theoretical and methodological insights on a range of creative and pedagogic approaches to data gathering and analysis. It also focuses on issues of interpretation and its role in narrative research through offering alternative forms of ‘giving voice’. It is envisaged that the session will include practical tasks where attendees will experiment with such methods – with a particular focus on participant voice\, and how creative approaches can access and embolden same.
